Motivation is found where you least expect it
In 2003, Brad Kelley’s life changed in an instant. He was paralyzed and confined to a hospital bed after being diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome, a rare autoimmune nerve disorder that affects roughly one in 100,000 people. Following five blood transfusions and an extended hospital stay, doctors told him he might never walk normally again. Brad left the hospital in a wheelchair, but he also left with a quiet resolve to take control of his future.
Where others saw permanent limitations, Brad discovered an unshakable will to move forward in a positive direction. He learned to walk again and eventually transformed into a World Champion Elite Ultra Distance Triathlete. Through constant pain, tingling, and numbness, he relied on a positive mindset built around three simple beliefs: Positivity every day, Anything Is Possible and Never Quit. Those principles have guided his life and inspired countless others to face challenges they once believed were insurmountable.
Brad has competed in some of the toughest endurance races in the world, pushing his body far beyond what doctors once thought possible. He also climbed Mount Kilimanjaro (the highest mountain in Africa and the highest free-standing mountain in the world, enduring every step as proof that a positive mindset can matter as much as physical strength.
His journey did not stop there. Brad later faced another major battle when he was diagnosed with cancer and confronted the possibility of losing his right eye. Once again, he refused to let fear define the outcome and continued pushing beyond perceived limits.
“You’ll never compete in an IRONMAN.”
When a neurologist once told him, “You’ll never compete in an IRONMAN,” it became fuel rather than a setback. Brad went on to complete his first 140.6-mile IRONMAN triathlon and has since built an extraordinary endurance résumé, including:
-
2025 World Champion (age group), International Ultra Triathlon Association (4th overall out of 214 age group athletes)
-
4 Quintuple Iron Distance Triathlons (12-mile swim, 560-mile bike, 131-mile run)
-
17 IRONMAN Triathlons (2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike, 26.2-mile run)
-
3 Double Iron Distance Triathlons (4.8-mile swim, 224-mile bike, 52.4-mile run)
-
2 Triple Iron Distance Triathlons (7.2-mile swim, 336-mile bike, 78.6-mile run)
As an IRONMAN Legacy Athlete, Brad made history as the first Guillain-Barré survivor to cross the finish line at the IRONMAN World Championships in Kona, Hawaii.
Looking ahead, Brad is scheduled to compete in a Double DECAMAN triathlon in Brazil in May 2026, racing alongside world-class ultra endurance athletes. That ultra triathlon race includes a 48-mile swim, a 2,240-mile bike, and a 524-mile run. He also plans to compete in multiple 10x and 5x IRONMAN distance events worldwide, with a long-term goal of completing a Triple Deca 30x Ultra Distance Triathlon.
